On top of that, all players can gain mastery points, marks,glyphs,quintessences, and seals(slots seen below, along with the level you have to be to use the slot). These can give your champion an extra boost in-game, such as attack speed, HPS, movement speed, Mana regen, damage, and defense.
For example, if you play a tanky character,like Garen, you already have the Defenses covered,so focus on attack, and then defense once you go down to the last "skill" in the tree(this is due to the fact that effective speed boosting skills are too far down the utility tree to attain once the offence tree is covered).
The above is just an example,but these three things(Summoner spells, runes and masteries) make League of legends stand out as a definitive MOBA experience.
But there is a much better MOBA out there.
That MOBA is Smite. in Smite, you play as gods, and its from a much different perspective than what is usually seen.
Smite also has actives instead of summoner spells, adding a new layer of strategy to the game.
All i'm saying is that MOBAs and video games in general are in constant competition for accolades and awards from gamers, but that doesnt matter. What does matter is that the game is good,and is enjoyed.
